Do you love seeing beautiful plants grow? Do you have a “green thumb”? Do you love food? Do you love to cook? Or are you running out of ideas on how to make your time enjoyable and worthwhile? Here’s a great idea that you will surely enjoy. It involves gardening but in a smaller and much more manageable level. It’s called windowsill gardening.

Windowsill Garden

One exciting activity that seniors can do is to start what’s commonly called a Windowsill Garden. Windowsill gardens are normally planted with flowers in vibrant colors. However, for those who love great healthy food and those who love cooking, a windowsill garden can also be planted with herbs. Edible windowsill gardens are interesting and practical because the herbs can be used in daily cooking at home. Now you might be asking what kinds of herbs? The easiest to grow are basil, dill, cilantro, lavender, mint, parsley, oregano, chives, and thyme.

How to Start? It’s very easy. Seasoned gardeners recommend using a potting mix instead of soil. This is a healthier option as soil can sometimes carry disease, which can be very harmful.

Where? A place with sun; a sunny windowsill is best.

What to use? There are many choices actually of pots and containers. Even simple plastic trays can be used as long as they are at least 6 inches deep.

Things to remember:

When you buy a fertilizer, tell the store clerk you’re using it for edible plants. Use fertilizers not more than once a month.

Herb plants need very minimal water so their roots don’t end up soggy. Thus, avoid watering then ever so often as it’ll do them more harm than good.

Remember to use them often because they will grow fuller when they are clipped often.

Other plants that can be planted in windowsills are tomatoes, sunflowers, and strawberries.

If you are unsure about how to start or what types of herbs to plant, there are windowsill herb and edible plant kits available in local gardening stores. Also, do not hesitate to ask for help from these stores as they have knowledgeable store clerks who can make the necessary recommendations for you so you can immediately start your windowsill garden and enjoy every minute of it!
